DA Hike Calculator
A DA Hike Calculator computes the revised Dearness Allowance (DA) and its impact on total salary for central government employees and pensioners. DA is a cost-of-living adjustment paid by the Government of India, calculated as a percentage of basic pay. The DA rate is revised twice a year — in January and July — based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) for Industrial Workers published by the Labour Bureau. The DA hike calculator shows the new DA amount, revised basic pay + DA, and monthly salary impact after each revision.

DA compensates government employees for rising prices. The DA percentage is calculated using the AICPI base year 2016=100. As of January 2025, the DA rate for central government employees under the 7th Pay Commission stands at 53%. Each 1% DA hike on a basic pay of ₹56,100 (Level 10 entry) increases monthly salary by ₹561. The DA hike calculator helps employees and pensioners estimate the exact salary and pension impact of each DA revision.
How to Use the DA Hike Calculator
To calculate the impact of a DA hike on your salary, enter your basic pay and apply the revised DA percentage. The calculator returns the new DA amount and the revised monthly salary.

3
View Revised DA and SalaryThe calculator displays the new DA amount, basic pay + DA total, and the monthly salary increase from the previous DA rate.
How DA Is Calculated for Central Government Employees
The DA percentage for central government employees under the 7th CPC is calculated using the formula: DA % = ((Average of AICPI for the last 12 months − 261.42) ÷ 261.42) × 100. The base figure 261.42 is the average AICPI for the 12 months before January 2016 (the 7th CPC implementation date). The Labour Bureau publishes AICPI data monthly, and the government announces DA revisions effective from January 1 and July 1 each year.
How the DA Hike Calculator Works
The DA hike calculator applies the DA percentage to the basic pay to compute the DA amount. The formula is straightforward but the impact calculation requires comparing old and new DA rates.
Inputs: Basic pay and DA percentage (new and optionally old). Outputs: DA amount, basic + DA total, monthly increase from DA hike, and DA arrears for backdated months. DA arrears: DA revisions are announced after the effective date. The arrears for the gap months = Monthly DA increase × Number of backdated months.
DA Hike Calculation Example
A DA hike calculation example: Suresh is a Level 10 central government officer with basic pay ₹56,100 per month. The DA rate increases from 50% to 53% effective January 2025. The official order is released in March 2025 (2 months of arrears).
Step 1: Old DA amount
Old DA = ₹56,100 × 50% = ₹28,050/month. Total basic + DA = ₹84,150.
₹28,050
Step 2: New DA amount after 3% hike
New DA = ₹56,100 × 53% = ₹29,733/month. Monthly increase = ₹29,733 − ₹28,050 = ₹1,683.
+₹1,683/mo
Step 3: DA arrears for 2 backdated months
DA arrears = ₹1,683 × 2 = ₹3,366. New monthly basic + DA = ₹85,833.
₹3,366 arrears

DA Hike Calculator FAQs and Common Questions
Dearness Allowance (DA) is a cost-of-living adjustment paid by the Government of India to central government employees and pensioners to offset the impact of inflation on purchasing power. DA is calculated as a percentage of basic pay and revised twice a year based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) for Industrial Workers.
DA is revised twice a year — effective January 1 and July 1. The official orders are typically issued 2–3 months after the effective date. Employees receive DA arrears for the months between the effective date and the order date.
When DA crosses 50%, the government historically merges DA with basic pay and resets DA to 0% under a new Pay Commission. This merger increases the basic pay, which raises HRA, transport allowance, and retirement benefits calculated on basic pay. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to address this DA merger.
Yes, Dearness Allowance is fully taxable under the Income Tax Act. DA is added to the gross salary and taxed according to the applicable income tax slab. DA also increases the HRA exemption calculation since HRA exemption is computed on basic + DA.
Calculate DA arrears by multiplying the monthly DA increase by the number of backdated months between the effective date and the payment date. DA arrears = (New DA amount − Old DA amount) × Number of months. For a ₹1,683 monthly increase with 3 months of arrears: ₹1,683 × 3 = ₹5,049.
No, state government DA rates are decided independently by each state government and may differ from central government DA. Some states follow central DA rates with a delay, while others use their own State Pay Commission recommendations and separate AICPI calculations.
